This Month in the Garden
Things to do iN August
VEGETABLES―Now is the time to plant your fall vegetable garden. Consider broccoli, cauliflower, collards, beets, lettuce, English peas, spinach, turnips, and mustard.
TURF―Grass should be mowed after a rain or watering. Mowing a dry lawn in August heat will further stress the turf due to the drying effects of wind and sun.
IRIS & DAYLILLIES—It is time to divide spring-blooming perennials because crowded clumps will not fully bloom. After dividing tubers and roots, trim away dead portions and only use the younger, more vigorous portions for replanting. Planting bed soil should be amended 8-10 inches deep with composted pine bark and sphagnum peat moss.
